If you’ve recently made the decision that you want to prioritise your health but you don’t know where to start, these first few steps into fitness will help kickstart your fitness journey.

Tell your family or friends about your fitness goals

Whether you prefer to exercise alone or you enjoy the company of friends, telling a friend or family member is a helpful way to stay accountable when it comes to your fitness goals. Choose someone who is supportive of your goals and efforts and be honest with what you want to achieve. By sharing your goals with others, you open up a conversation about how you are doing, where you want to go, and how you want to get there. This friend or family member can check in on you regularly, and congratulate you on your wins! You may even inspire them to set their own fitness goals!

Find a gym buddy!

This leads on from the first point. Having a gym buddy or exercise pal can really help you stick to your fitness programme. On the days you feel like skipping a workout because it’s dark and cold, you are far less likely to do so if you have someone relying on you to show up for them! You’ll also have that time with a friend to look forward to! Not only will they be encouraging you to show up, but they will also provide accountability. Remember that it’s not all about your motivation, they’ll need motivation too! So remember to be there for them just as much as they are there for you. Getting through tough times together and coming out stronger will create a special bond between the two of you.

Get the help of a personal trainer

One of the beauties of having a personal trainer is that they take care of all the planning and setting up of your workouts. You can just rock up, give it your all, and go! You don’t have to know what exercises to do, how to do them, or how many reps or sets you should be doing. It is my job to plan this all for you and show you step-by-step how to perform each exercise with great technique and form.

Working with a personal trainer is particularly useful if you are a beginner who is unsure of how to use certain machines or you don’t know what weights to use. I am here to support you, encourage you, and help you along the way to achieving your goals.

Schedule your workouts to fit your lifestyle

It can be really tricky to fit in workouts when they aren’t scheduled into our weekly lives. Things happen, work drags on and that extra zoom call has made you late for the gym. Before you know if you’re on your way home with your unused gym kit. We’ve all been there. When life is hectic, schedule your workouts. Find time before work if it’s easier to plan for, chances are you won’t miss that 1 hour of sleep because of the endorphins you’ll get from finishing an amazing workout. It’s also such a great way to start your day. It’s also important to remember that if you have an extremely busy week where you can barely squeeze your workouts in, make sure your sessions are something that you ENJOY. If you’re dreading your workout, you’re far more likely to not show up. Find things that you enjoy, whether that is a group kickboxing class, spinning, outdoor running group, or yoga! Give it a go and try something new this week.

Have a plan

There is a reason why even the most successful athletes and Olympians still follow fitness plans. Don’t underestimate the importance of setting goals and writing a fitness plan. Having a clear strategy in place will significantly increase your chances of achieving your goals.
